Oliver Twist

Why not take a look at

Plot Setting (without the story!)

Born in a workhouse in 1830s England, Oliver Twist spends the early years of his life in a poorly run home for young orphans and then is transferred to an adult workhouse. Food in the workhouse is not abundant and it is Oliver who gets the job of asking for more gruel at the end of a meal. This doesn’t go down too well and Mr. Bumble, the parish beadle, offers £5 pounds to anyone who will take the boy. A brutish chimney sweep is the first taker but it is to the local undertaker, Mr. Sowerberry who takes Oliver. But things do not work out well with Noah Claypole, the other apprentice, and after a falling out, Oliver incurs the Sowerberrys' wrath. Oliver runs away and travels toward London.

Now the story continues ...
